Private terrace pools are often small, more for cooling off than for swimming laps. If you want room to swim, a shared swim-up pool is usually bigger.

Private, Semi-Private or Shared: How to Tell
Read the room description on the hotel's own site, not just the room name. The same words mean different things at different brands:
- "Private pool": the pool is for your room only. This is Riu's and Catalonia's wording for their swim-up rooms.
- "Semi-private": shared by a small number of rooms. Royalton, Hard Rock and Hyatt use this.
- "Sharing pool": the Greek term for a pool shared by a group of rooms.
- "Direct pool access": almost always a shared pool.
Two cautions. Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres says whether you get a private pool or main-pool access depends on availability at check-in, and that neither is guaranteed. And Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta's fact sheet mentions "private plunge pools" for its swim-ups while the room descriptions say semi-private, so ask before you book.
